Westerpark

To the west of the picturesque Jordaan lies the Westerpark nieghbourhood, which has its vibrant midpoint in the creative area around the Westergastfariek.

The Westerpark neighouehood is relatively new. The are was built at the end of the 19th century to accommodate railway and dockworkers who came to construct the North

Sea Canal. The neighbourhood has blossomed over the part

20 years, thanks in part to the transformation of the former Westergastfabriek into a cultural hotspot. In addition to the cinema, galleries, clubs, hip acrcade hall, cafés and restaurants, there is a jam-packed festival programme in the summer.

Walk north through the park to the up- and- coming Spaarnammer neighourhood, with its beautiful Amsterdam school style architecture. On the south side of the park is the Staatsliedenuurt, where you can seek out a sunny terrace on the Hugo de Grootplein.

The gas that was produced by the Westergastfabriek used to illuminate the city of Amsterdam.
